Somewhere in Vietnam

18 August 1967

Dear Jim & Beverly and Family,

I sure was happy to hear the baby was delivered and a boy at that!  I got some beer from Mama San and got high as a kite.  I know you must feel real happy and proud.  Mom said he was just gorgeous.  What does Monique think of her new brother?  You make sure Beverly takes it easy now and rests up.

I was going to wash my cruddy clothes but the Battalion Commander is coming out supposedly so we can't go in the water until he leaves.  These lifers sure piss me off!  They are nothing but sweaters.  The more rank a man attains, the more he has to sweat.  I can understand why there are so many alcoholics in the Corps!

I have got to get to Da Nang and get my eyes checked when we get back to 63.  My eyes have really been bothering me this past week.  I may need new glasses.

It is hotter than hell out today.  I wish it would cloud up and rain.  I wouldn't mind if it rained for forty days and nites.

We may be going out on an operation soon.  The bridge is almost finished.  I'll be glad to get out of here.  Everyone is tired and bored with the place.  They have a club, flicks and messhall up on 63 now.  I guess they have a small PX up there too.

I hope to go to Bankok next month.  I should get a quota easily.  I want to buy myself a Black Star Saphire ring while I'm there.  One of my buddies up in Da Nang got one and it was really beautiful.  They cost less there than here in Vietnam too!

Well Jim, I have 105 days left to go.  I be in the two digits in five days and then I can really start feeling short.

We have a mascot now.  It is a baby mongoose and it is a card.  It plays just like a baby kitten at times.  When grown they are known for being able to kill a cobra.

I been cutting hair again.  Maybe I'll be a barber when I get out. Ha! Of course, I ain't making any money yet!

I'll close for now and get another couple letters written.

Congratulations new Papa and Mama San!  Mom thought you were going to name him Alan LaMonte!  She wasn't sure tho.

Love, your brother

Alan
